Pune: Ground Work Starts For Metro’s Extension From Pimpri To Nigdi
Pune: Maha Metro has commenced soil testing and foundational work for the extension of the Metro line from Pimpri to Nigdi, spanning 4.5 kilometers. Approved last year, the project aims to enhance connectivity from Pune to the industrial regions of Chinchwad and Nigdi, with four new stations ending at Bhakti Shakti Chowk.
Currently, Metro trains operate up to the PCMC main building. “The same line will be extended to Nigdi. The entire route, including the viaduct, is expected to be completed by mid-2027,” a Maha Metro official stated. To expedite the process, construction of concourse slabs and platforms at the four stations will commence simultaneously with the viaduct work.
Frequent commuters have expressed their eagerness for the project’s timely completion. “The PCMC-Nigdi section is a straight stretch, so we expect the work to progress smoothly,” said a Nigdi resident.
Officials noted that the majority of the viaduct will be aligned along the median of the existing old Mumbai-Pune road, minimizing the need for additional land. However, some land will be required for the new stations, with discussions planned with the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, state government, and private landholders as necessary.
Soil Testing Begins on Swargate-Katraj Section
Simultaneously, Maha Metro has initiated soil testing for the proposed Swargate-Katraj underground Metro. Although the project awaits final approval from the Union government, officials believe that early soil testing will save time. Actual construction will begin once the project is approved and an executing agency is appointed.
