“Chal Meri Luna”, remember this? Iconic Kinetic Luna to make a comeback as Electric Luna
PuneNow, June 01, 2023: In a delightful throwback for Indians, Kinetic Engineering is reviving the iconic Luna moped. This time, however, the Luna is getting a sustainable upgrade. Named “E-Luna,” the classic two-wheeler will now be an electric vehicle, manufactured in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra.
Half a century ago, the Luna, costing just Rs 2000, was the first moped in India, inspiring a popular meme, “Chal Meri Luna.” The catchphrase and the vehicle both garnered considerable popularity among the masses.
News of the E-Luna was shared on social media by Sulajja Firodia Motwani, CEO of the company. She posted a vintage video of the Luna along with an old photo of her father, Padmashree Mr. Arun Firodia, the creator of the original Luna, with the caption, “A blast from the past!! ‘Chal Meri Luna’ and it’s creator.. my father, Padmashree Mr. Arun Firodia! Watch this space for something revolutionary & exciting from Kinetic Green….u r right …it’s ‘e Luna!!!'”
Motwani’s post clearly suggests that the upcoming model will be the first in the series of electric vehicles from Kinetic Green Energy & Power Solutions. According to media reports, the company has already begun the production of the chassis and other components. The initial production target is set at 5,000 units per month, which is expected to increase over time.
Many social media users took to twitter to express their nostalgia and they also expressed excitement upon the relaunch of their beloved mode of transport decades back.
In a clear nod to the eco-friendly direction the company is taking, Kinetic is setting up a separate assembly line for the Electric Luna.
This is not the first time a vintage scooter brand has been revived with an electric twist in India. Bajaj Auto has relaunched their popular Chetak scooter in an electric avatar, and LML is reportedly preparing to launch an electric Star scooter this year.
In 1972, the original Luna was a popular choice, launching in various versions such as TFR, Double Plus, Wings, Magnum, and Super over the years. Now, as the E-Luna is poised to hit the Indian streets once again, the legacy continues, this time promoting green mobility solutions.
