Pune: Three coaches for the Metro Line 3, being built to connect Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar through an elevated corridor, have been dispatched from Chennai. These coaches are expected to reach Pune by next week, reported Times of India, quoting officials of Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).

Officials stated that over the next eight months, approximately 16 to 22 coaches will be gradually dispatched. The entire operation of Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar Metro (Metro Line 3) is expected to commence in April 2025.

A PMRDA official told TOI, “Three coaches for Line 3 are en route from Chennai. After these are delivered next week, we will start testing and hold trial runs to ensure all safety and operational parameters are met.” The three coaches, built in Chennai, have undergone thorough inspections.

The PMRDA is likely to begin public trial runs on the 23.5km Line 3 route soon after the initial testing is completed. The Metro Line 3 between Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar is a major undertaking stretching 23.5km and includes 23 stations — such as Hinjewadi, Wipro Chowk, Shivaji Chowk, Wakad flyover, Balewadi stadium, Vidyapeeth Chowk, AIR Kendra, and Shivajinagar court. This new route aims to provide efficient transportation options.

The Metro Line 3 project is being undertaken by PMRDA under a PPP model, with the Tata Group and Siemens forming a special purpose vehicle, Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited, to execute the project.

The coaches for this metro line are being manufactured by Alstom at their Chennai factory.
