In a remarkable turn of events, an essay competition was held at the site of the recent Pune Porsche accident in Kalyani Nagar. The competition was organized by the Pune Youth Congress as a form of protest against the incident and the subsequent judicial decisions.

The Incident

Last Sunday, a tragic accident occurred in Kalyani Nagar, Pune, involving a speeding Porsche driven by the intoxicated son of a local builder. The accident resulted in the deaths of two young individuals, a man, and a woman. The accused, a minor, was granted bail by the Juvenile Court within 15 hours of the accident on the condition that he writes an essay about the accident and works with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) for 15 days. This decision sparked outrage across Pune and the nation.

Essay Competition as Protest

To voice their dissatisfaction, the Pune Youth Congress organized a state-level essay competition at the site of the accident. The competition, which began at 9 AM in front of Bowler Pub in Kalyani Nagar, aimed to raise awareness and provoke thought on the repercussions of such incidents. The topics for the essays included:

  • If My Father Was a Builder
  • Who is Ashwini and Anish’s Killer?
  • My Favorite Car (Porsche, Ferrari, Mercedes)
  • Side Effects of Alcohol
  • If I Really Become a Police Officer?

The competition offered cash prizes ranging from Rs 11,111 for the first place to Rs 1,111 for the fourth place. The age group eligible to participate was 17 years and 8 months to 58 years. The competition received a tremendous response from the citizens of Pune, and the event was heavily discussed on social media.

Safety and Security Measures

To ensure the smooth conduct of the event, significant security measures were put in place. Approximately 60 to 70 policemen were deployed to maintain order and prevent any untoward incidents. The competition proceeded peacefully, with a strong police presence ensuring safety for all participants and attendees.

Legal Repercussions and Public Outrage

The minor involved in the Porsche accident was initially granted bail, which required him to write a 300-word essay on the accident and perform community service with the RTO. However, following public outrage and questions raised about the role of the police and the Child Rights Court, the minor has now been sent to a juvenile correctional home.

In connection with the accident, five people, including the boy’s father and grandfather, have been arrested. Allegations have surfaced that the grandfather, Surendra Agarwal, pressured the detained driver to take the blame for the accident.

Government Actions and Consequences

In the aftermath of the accident, the State Excise Department took strict action against the Ballr Pub in Kalyani Nagar. The pub was found to be non-compliant with several regulations, leading to its immediate sealing and the revocation of its permit room licence. The raid was conducted by a team led by Superintendent Charansingh Rajput, following orders from the District Collector.

Inspector Vasant Kausadikar, who led the raid, stated, “The State Excise Department consistently takes action against pubs in Kalyani Nagar. Despite being ordered to comply with regulations, Ballr Pub continued its unruly activities.” The pub was found selling alcohol outside permitted areas and not maintaining mandatory records, prompting the sealing of the premises.

Broader Implications

The Pune Porsche accident has led to heightened vigilance among pub and bar owners, with the administration maintaining strict surveillance to prevent similar incidents. The State Excise Department’s Pune Division has launched an extensive campaign, resulting in actions against over 49 pubs and bars across the city and district.

The incident has triggered widespread anger and political activity, with many residents expressing concerns over the influence of pubs on the city’s youth and culture. The administration’s response highlights a commitment to enforcing regulations and ensuring public safety in the wake of such tragedies.
