Why only a few areas of Pune are getting rain while others remain hot and dry?

Maharashtra Weather Update

Pune has been experiencing uneven rainfall distribution, leading to distinct weather patterns in different parts of the city. On Tuesday, Shivajinagar received a modest 5mm of rain, while Lohegaon reported a slightly higher 10mm. This variation in weather has been noticeable over the past couple of days, with Monday seeing substantial rainfall in Baner, whereas Pimpri Chinchwad remained completely dry.

According to a report by Indian Express, Anupam Kashyapi, the former head of weather forecasting at the India Meteorological Department (IMD), attributes these weather discrepancies to local disturbances caused by high daytime temperatures, which lead to cloud formation. Despite the rainfall, temperatures across Pune remained high, with most areas recording temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius. On Monday, temperatures soared as high as 40.7 degrees Celsius at Shivajinagar’s central observatory and 43.2 degrees Celsius in Koregaon Park, marking the highest in Pune district.

Kashyapi explained that the recent weather patterns are characterized by dark clouds, thunder, and lightning, typical of summer rains. However, due to insufficient moisture in the atmosphere, the rainfall has not been extensive and highly localized. This minimal precipitation has not provided significant relief from the ongoing high temperatures, which continue to affect the city during both day and night.

The city also reported at least seven incidents of tree felling in the Baner, Aundh, and Pashan areas, according to officials from the fire brigade control room. Fortunately, these incidents did not lead to any casualties or major property damage.

The weather expert warned that the hot and humid conditions akin to a heat wave are likely to persist, raising concerns about potential heat strokes if precautions are not taken. Residents are advised to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and to take safety measures during evening lightning activities.
