Pune: Watch | PCMC Police seize Rs 50 lakh unaccounted cash, intensify surveillance ahead of Lok Sabha elections

Pune election cash seizure

The Shirgaon police station, under the Pimpri Chinchwad Police jurisdiction, seized unaccounted cash worth Rs 50 lakh during a checkpoint operation at the Urse toll booth on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway, officials confirmed on Tuesday evening. The operation is part of a wider effort to ensure a free and fair election process across the Pimpri Chinchwad area, with the police setting up multiple checkpoints to enforce the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) that is currently in effect due to the Lok Sabha elections.

The seized money was found in an SUV traveling from Mumbai to Pune, containing three passengers who were unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for the large sum of cash. As a result, the Shirgaon police have taken the prescribed legal actions in accordance with the MCC guidelines. The case has been referred to the Income Tax Department for further investigation to determine the source and intended use of the cash.

The Pimpri Chinchwad police have intensified their surveillance and checks at nine strategic locations within their jurisdiction in light of the upcoming elections. These checkpoints are designed to intercept unaccounted cash, illegal liquor production and transportation, criminal activities, and unauthorized firearms, adhering to the directives from the Election Commission of India.

In this critical pre-election period, the police are committed to ensuring that all activities are conducted within the legal framework and that any violations of the Model Code of Conduct are dealt with promptly and effectively.
