Pune: Alcohol Sales Prohibited on Key Election Dates in Four Constituencies

Pune alcohol sales ban elections

In order to ensure the smooth conduct of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, District Collector Suhas Divase has announced a prohibition on alcohol sales across four key constituencies in Pune district. The affected areas include Baramati, Maval, Pune, and Shirur, where the restriction is aimed at upholding the sanctity of the electoral process.

The directive comes as part of the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct for the general elections, with the District Collector’s Office issuing clear instructions to close alcohol sales on specified dates. These dates are May 5th, 6th, 11th, 12th, 13th, and June 4th, coinciding with polling and vote counting days.

Local authorities, including the State Excise Department, Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissionerates, and the District Police Superintendent’s offices, have been duly notified and bear the responsibility for any violations of this order. The prohibition applies from 48 hours before the end of each polling day and covers all domestic and foreign liquor manufacturing units within these constituencies. While these units can continue operations, serving alcohol on the declared dry days is strictly forbidden.

This measure is taken under the Representation of the People Act, 1951, Section 135(C), reflecting the administration’s commitment to a fair and orderly election process. Strict penalties await those who defy the orders, with enforcement actions to be taken under the Maharashtra Prohibition Act, 1949, and relevant sections of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

The election phases for the affected constituencies are scheduled as follows: Baramati will see polling in the third phase, while Maval, Pune, and Shirur will follow in the fourth phase. The administration’s proactive steps underline the importance of maintaining public order and compliance with the electoral code of conduct, ensuring that the democratic process is conducted without interference.
